FOREWORD
The aims of the Touring Committee of the Victorian Amateur Canoe Association are to:
Encourage recreational canoeing,
Provide up to date information on Victorian waterways,
Enhance the available canoeing,
Protect our touring environment, and
Promote safety in canoeing.
To further these aims we have, in the past, produced the 'Canoeing Guide to Victoria'. Each edition has been produced voluntarily by hard working canoeists. Such is the case with this, the 6th Edition. Editor Alan Jones was keen to update the Guide, and to use his management skills, a new format and many new features.
The river information contained herein is only a guide. Water levels are continually changing, affecting markedly the flow, the look on the river and the skills required to paddle it. It is well to remember that low water levels can be dangerous. There are more rocks exposed, with a greater risk of damage to equipment, or to trap the unwary or unskilled. As the level rises and covers the rocks, canoeing becomes easier; referred to in the Guide as the 'best level'. At higher levels again, the current frequently becomes swift and dangerous, with pressure waves.
The new indexing will make easy reading and provide a means for locating nearby rivers.
With the expansion of the Sea Touring section we bring you some of Victoria's most picturesque coastline around the Mallacoota - Wilsons Promontory area.
To get the most out of your canoeing or kayaking, join one of the many clubs around Victoria. They bring friendship, leadership and a means of reaching the peaceful splendour of Victoria's rivers, combined with adventure and excitement as only a canoeist can see it.
Happy and safe canoeing, and use our Guide wisely.
