The Walnuts to Mitta Mitta
This is a small narrow river. From the entry point at The Walnuts camping ground the river flows under the road bridge. Over the next two kilometres the river is a little steeper with large boulders. This section is more technical and is prone to snagging. After the Holloway Logging Road another steeper section is reached. One particular rapid 'Whirlpool' can push less experienced paddlers into a undercut rock. The section continues with easy grade 2 rapids to the gauge (river left). After the gauge there are several shelf type rapids before entering a steep sided valley. There are lots of fun easy grade 2 - 2+ rapids in this section. The river then flows back towards the road and Mitta Mitta is reached. A public reserve at the rear of the Laurel Hotel is the exit point. There is a weir at this point that should not be paddled. This river is narrow and prone to snags. The section between The Walnuts and Holloway Logging Road is the more technical section and is not suitable for beginner paddlers. In high water the rapids in this section would join up. The section from the gauge to Mitta Mitta is more suitable for less experienced paddlers. It is possible to enter the river near the gauge. As the river flows through farmland you always need to be aware that temporary wire fences may be strung up. If you are camping at the Mitta Mitta caravan park it is possible to paddle to the park by continuing down Snowy Creek to the junction with the Mitta Mitta River.
