The section below the dam is generally referred to as the Lower Mitta Mitta. The access point for this trip is near the Observation Area at the Dartmouth Regulating Pondage. A track from the car park identified by a sign 'Canoeists Walk', leads to a good launching place below the weir wall. Egress is available at several places. The best is where the Dartmouth road and the river come together, upstream of the Mitta Mitta township. This trip is shorter than the others, but contains most of the white water. The next points are at the old Dartmouth Road bridge, about 2km upstream of the Mitta Mitta township, or at the new Dartmouth Road bridge, left of the Omeo Highway a few kilometres downstream of the township. Just around the first corner after launching, there is a small weir followed by a good rapid. Shoot the weir through the centre but care should be taken as the stopper could be dangerous at certain water levels. About five minutes further on the 'Sharks Teeth' rapid is reached. This should be inspected from the right bank. This rapid is not technically difficult, but it has had its character changed by blasting and may contain many sharp submerged rocks. The safest route is down the right hand side of the right hand channel but beware of the cross current from the left that pushes the unwary towards sharp rocks on the right. At certain water levels this rapid could be grade 4. Depending on the level the white water then continues for about 1 hour and then quietens down as the Mitta Mitta township approaches. The previously well known rapids at 'Scales Street' and the Whales Head' are now submerged below the water of the pondage.
