The area was burnt in a major fire and so there can be lots of logs and woody debris in the river. At the start the river flows into a narrow canyon, with the first rapid collecting most of the debris which can make it unable to be paddled. Next is a tight steep grade 4+ or 5 which has 3 big holes. Then there is a series of grade 4 rapids over the next few kilometers and then changing to grade 3 as the canyon opens up onto an alpine plain. There are lot of camping sites along the river and also 4WD track comming in from Mount Hotham Airfield if you want to make this a day trip. The next section to the Victoria River junction is continuous grade 2-3 and then after the junction there are steeper grade 3 rapids and a lot of logs and woody debris again down to the Blue Duck
Hazards:Lots of logs and other woody debris in a number of places along the river. The canyon is narrow and you scout most of the rapids by boulder hoping down the right bank and so higher water would make this difficult.
