Tabulam to Yates Crossing
A 28 km variable section, two thirds is still to slow moving flatwater, the remainder divided between Grade 1 -2 rapids and narrow fast flowing channel.
A reasonable level of fitness is necessary to complete this section in 1 day.
Best with a reasonable water flow to allow clearance through rapids and extra assistance over the flat sections.
Topo maps indicated show where river is constricted into faster channels. Take care at all these sections.
Care should be taken with all white water sections. These can vary in difficulty depending on river height with some harder grade 2 rapids at low levels, becoming fast moving water with wave trains capable of swamping your canoe at higher levels. Snags are present, changing location often after floods. Overhanging branches combined with captured flood debris are always present in fast flowing channels posing hazards particularly on outside of bends.
Hazards mentioned above occur at:
Approximately first 5 kilometres downstream of Tabulam with a hard Grade 2 rapid adjacent the cemetery followed by fast flowing channels and grade 1 rapids with overhanging branches for another kilometre.
Next, after approximately 5 kms of slow moving flatwater joined by gentle gravel races there is a constricted channel with grade 2 rapids and overhanging branches . There can be a significant wave train here at higher water levels.
Approximately 2 kms below these rapids there is a 1km long section of grade 1 & 2 rapids with a lot of exposed rock to manoeuvre around. These rapids are fairly free of overhanging obstacles.
After these rapids there are long, still and slow moving stretches interspersed with a couple of narrow constricted channels.
Care must be taken navigating some of the races between pools especially at higher flows due to changes of direction directly below the race and overhanging branches combined with the outside of the bends.
The last kilometre before Ernie Baldwin bridge at Yates Crossing there is a channel with constricted flow with at least 6 fast races with changes of direction at the bottom and overhanging branch obstacles. If the water level is higher than around 0.8, passing under the bridge will not be possible and there is not much warning as you round the last bend before the bridge. Be prepared to land on the left hand side before the bridge where there is some slack water. If the water level is low bear right and pass under the bridge on the right hand side then take the middle of the stream to miss the rocks reaching out from the right hand bank.
