Yates Crossing to Yulgilbar Bridge
Entry at Yates Crossing just below bridge. The first 12 km is mostly flat water with slow flow. However there is a narrow fast flowing channell about 1 km from start point which needs some care at higher levels as snags can be lodged in this channell after floods increasing the difficulty. There are a couple more easy races in the first 12 km. At the end of the Kungurrabar Broadwater there is a Granite rock bar intersecting the river, The main channell through the rock bar is on the left hand side but it may be difficult to run the rapids through here due to overhanging branches at high level and scraping the bottom at low levels be prepared for some wading, lifting and have a line handy. There is another rock bar a short distance, about 1/2 km, after the first with the main channell on the right side and another more extensive rock bar another 1.5 kms after the second. The third one is possible to run some of the rapids but overhanging branches are an obstacle and danger. It helps to have a canoe with no protruding structure such as back rests or rod holders to enable an easier passage under the tangle of bottle brush trees through all three of these rock bars. At the bottom of the Horseshoe bend there is a constricted narrow channell with Granite boulders, grade 2 and possible grade 3 rapids at higher levels care must be taken here as these rapids have destroyed canoes of unwary paddlers. It is possible to portage around these rapids on the right side. For 2 kms below these rapids there is fast flowing narrow channell with some granite boulders in the stream. The next 10 kms is slow deep pools. The rapids below this at the "Castle" are runnable grade 1-2 but again watch out for overhanging branches particularly at high water levels. Take care approaching Yulgilbar bridge as the bridge is obscured by trees growing on the parrallel islands. Take the left side to land.It would be very difficult to paddle this section in 1 day except for maybe a very fit kayaker.
