Childowlah Training Run

One of the Waterways Guide team and Board member of PaddleNSW. A member of the River Canoe Club, coordinates safety and training and loves to paddle whitewater.
This Section of the river provides Grade 1 rapids for about 2 kilometres to hone basic whitewater skills before reaching the main Childowlah rapid -about grade 2 - 3. Water release at Burrumjuck Dam will affect the water hydraulics. This release is determined daily by downstream demand for irrigation waters. Real time water releases can indicate the possibility for appropriate levels. http://realtimedata.water.nsw.gov.au/water.stm?ppbm=410068&rs&1&rslf_org... Paddleable at 2500 ML/day however 3000 is deemed minimum. On March 12 2016 the River Canoe CLub paddled at 4,000 - 4,500 ML (1.56 - 1.63 m) . It was pushy however because the rapid is wide, a grade 2 course can be negotiated. There is a harder Grade 2+ rapid to river right which can challenge the intermediate paddler. Over 5,000 ML (1.77 m) can be released where the Childowlah rapid becomes extremely fast and washed out. Further Grade 1 rapids follow to the take out at the Childowlah Reserve, about 4 kilomtres downstream.
