Bruntons Bridge to Cowwarr Weir
This section starts with several gravel races and easy grade 2 rapids before enterring a small gorge. The entery is marked by a steeper rapid. Between sections of rapids there are long pools. The river noticably narrows at the main gorge and there are several ledge type drops. After approximatley 1.5 km the river widens out again. There is a long flat section before the last group of good rapids are reached. Triple Stager is the first rapid and the biggest rapid on the section. The river sweeps around a right hand bend and drops as another channel of the river enters on river right. The river then turns left and flows over one drop and then another to end the rapid. The last drop is the largest. It is possible to portage the rapid on river right. Approximately 1.5 km from Triple Stager S Bend rapid is reached. In high levels it is possible to paddle straight down this rapid but at lower levels the main current dog legs to the left behind a large rock and then flows over a ledge drop. Approximately 1 km further on there is a gauge on river left. There is 4 wheel drive access to the gauge. The gauge pool is immediately above the last recognised rapid, Hole in the Wall or The Waterfall rapids. In high water it is possible to paddle straight down this rapid on river left. In lower water either Hole in the Wall or The Waterfall is paddled. Hole in the Wall is a wide slot between two large rocks on river left. The other option is reached by continuing to paddle on river right until a narrow chute to a rocky drop is reached 'The Waterfall'. There is a pool at the bottom of The Waterfall.
It is then approximately 4 km of flat water to the exit at Cowwarr Weir. As you get closer to the weir the current stops so the last couple of km can be a slog. This section is the most popular on the Thomson River and contains the best rapids. It is a long day trip or can be paddled over two days with a number of campsites along the river. There is access from several 4 wheel drive tracks but overall the river is remote and a walk out would be arduous.
The shuttle is mainly on dirt roads. The Cowwarr-Walhalla Road can be very slippery when wet and a 4 wheel drive may be preferable.
