Mt Buller Road to Hearns Road Bridge
The river starts as a narrow mountain stream. The river flows quite fast and the eddies are small, often under overhanging branches. There are numerous small rapids and fun surfing waves. Approximately 1 km from the start the first main rapid is reached. This is know as the Small Gorge. The rapid can be inspected or portaged on river left. The main chute flows into a hole. The river then swirls around before flowing through a narrow rock passage. At high levels the hole can be nasty and can such kayaks back into it. A few rock shelf rapids follow before the river flows under the Mount Fuller Road bridge at Merrijig. The gradient reduces through Merrijig and there is now farmland on both sides of the river. Willow trees are generally thick through this section and can be very hazzardous. After the Boorolite Chapel Hill Road the gradient once again increases and there are a number of rapids include a several shelf type drops. The farmland on both banks makes for good picnic spots and a snow covered Mount Buller can make it very picturesque on a fine Spring day. The second main rapid, 'Main Gorge' in then reached. This rapid can be inspected and portaged on river left. The river sweeps around a left hand bend and then drops between a rocky passage. It is worth inspecting the rapid as logs can block the rapid. From here it is a short distance to the Weir rapid. Immediately below the weir there is a couple of different channels and numerous trees which can be hazzardous. Finally the last rapid which is a fun surfing wave on river left is reached. From here is is a short paddle to the take out on river right immediately downstream of the Hearns Road Bridge.
