Preston River Dardanup West Road to Estuary Drive
Mainly paddle open (canadian) canoes.
Approximately 15km flatwater paddle that requires good winter rains to ensure that sufficient level is available to clear logs. I completed this section on the 14th August 2016 and found only one mandatory portage due to a large double trunk tree across the river. The wire mentioned as a hazard in Robyn Korshid's page has been broken/snapped sometime in the past and is no longer across the river.
The single simple class 2 rapid close to Picton is easily spotted by the large industrial stack to the right of the river on the approach. At 0.8m (750ML/day) discharge on the Boyanup Bridge gauge the rapid is easily traversed down the centre, at 0.94 (1050ML/day) the rapid is washed out.
Beginner-Intermediate skill levels are required. The river does not flow quickly but there are numerous trees down across it which depending on the level must be passed over, under or portaged. The capability to backpaddle against the river current is needed when you find that your craft will not fit through the available gap and if you broach there is a risk of being pinned.
