Windamere Dam to Riverlea Crossing
Small waterway, rarely more than knee deep at usual flow (50-70 ML). Beautiful section of river with pretty pools, riverstone races, casuarina-lined banks the whole way, and very secluded. Lots of portages, due to shallow sections and many fallen trees across the river. Take a small boat (for hauling over logs) - sit on top would be ideal - and allow 4 hours. Best to view this paddle as a paddle/haul/adventure. No phone reception until the last 2km (Telstra). No UHF contact with Castlereagh Highway due to mountains. No houses for the first 2 kms, then houses every km or so. 2 fences across the river to look out for. 4 bridges (including Riverlea Crossing) - 3 can be paddled under.
Water held in the dam for environmental purposes will begin in the 2018 to 2019 financial year, meaning that extra water can be released from the dam at times to meet certain environmental objectives for the health of the river and native fish populations, creating higher water levels whilst the release is on. To find out when an environmental release is on, contact Water NSW.
