Description:

The section takes 9-12hrs and is normally paddled as a leisurely 2-3 day trip, but can be paddled in two days. It is a good canadian river, being suitable for groups who note the, difficult rapids, are experienced at touring and are aware of the appropriate river level for their standard. An interesting day may be added in order to explore (by foot) the Mitchell River upstream from its confluence with the Nymboida.
The Nymboida River at Buccarumbi is wide and rather lazy, and provides a starting point which is easily accessible. The Buccarumbi to Cunglebung Creek stretch (27km) contains several grade 2 rapids plus many races and longish pools. All the rapids are clean with paddling time being 5-6 hours. The rapid at Cunglebung Creek is a two-stage grade 4 with the entire river narrowing across a 2m drop followed by a sharp left turn and then a 2m drop into a very turbulent rocky and aerated chute. It can best be portaged, if necessary, via the left-hand flood channel. During this stretch, the river generally flows through hilly and timbered forestry country which has many good campsites. The next 6.5km (1 to 2 hours) to the Mitchell River Junction is particularly scenic. It contains three grade 3 rapids, with the best, "Exhibition Falls" containing the largest pressure waves (Map Ref. 540156 Gundahl). To the Mitchell Junction the stretch is through a long steep-sided valley (the Granite Gorge) with predominantly flatwater. A camp at the junction, high on the left bank offers panoramic views both up and down stream. Mitchell River Junction to "New Zealand Falls" (5.5 km) takes 2 hours. The long boulder strewn "Bridal Veil" rapid at the end of the junction pool can be shot down the left side with approximately 1.2m (Jackadgery gauge); at this level it is a grade 3-4 but is grade 4 at higher river levels. In lower water shoot and wade down either side - this may take 30min. In high water do not attempt to shoot the right-hand channel. "New Zealand Falls", a grade 3-4 rapid (marked on Gundahl map) should be approached with extreme caution, especially in higher water. These falls are not obvious from upstream and should be carefully inspected from the right-hand bank. It is possible to shoot the 2m right-hand drop in low to moderate water. In low water a left bank portage is the easier.
Another 5km (1 hour) of paddling through pools and races ends at the towering Mann River Bridge. Camping in this last stage is restricted by farms so it is best planned to make Jackadgery your final destination. As previously mentioned it should be noted that the Nymboida River name ceases at the Mitchell River Junction.
