One of Australia’s best and most well-known sections of whitewater. Classic.
This great section of river flows through a beautiful, steep sided valley, featuring pockets of rainforest and towering granite cliffs and gorges with the river itself having a magnificent series of rapids. Although most commonly paddled as a day trip, the section also makes for a great, year-round, two-day trip with several beautiful riverside campsites along the way. The most used campsites are just upstream of The Chute, about 200m below Rumbles rapid (Kellys Camp) and around the corner after The Gorge (Death Adder campsite). The rapids are mostly grade III in standard with sporadic grade IV rapids that can be easily scouted and portaged by experienced whitewater paddlers. Particular care should be taken around First Pinnacle and the very bouldery Liftover and Mushroom rapids.
