A classic, moderate multi-day trip with a few bigger rapids to add some extra spice.
Although it is possible to split this trip into two sections, it is most often completed as a three-day trip. Access to the river at the 22km mark is possible with a 4WD at the Nymboida River Campground via Doboy Road, Ramornie Road and T-Ridge Road and doing a day trip from there to Jackadgery covers most of the best whitewater in this section.
The trip down to the Nymboida River Campground is a long day trip consisting of mostly long pools interspersed with grade II rapids in a farmland and open bushland setting. The trickiest feature in this section is often a tree-choked rapid approximately 5km into the trip. There are endless campsite opportunities in this section.
From the Nymboida River Campground the river gets more interesting with the first and best grade IV rapid being Cunglebung Falls, about 6km past the campground. It can be portaged on the left via Cunglebung Creek. The next 7km down to the Mann River junction is a great section of river, with beautiful scenery and three fun grade III rapids (Exhibition Falls, Demolition Derby and Tombstone) as well as many smaller ones. The Nymboida River officially ends at the junction of the Mann River but since there is no way to end a trip there, the rest of the section down to Jackadgery is included in this book.
The other two big (*III+) rapids are Bridal Veil Falls which is immediately after the Mann River junction and New Zealand Falls which is about 6km before the end of the trip. Bridal Veil Falls is a wide, rocky rapid with two channels. It is most commonly paddled down river-left and can be portaged, with some difficulty, down that side too. New Zealand Falls is a cool staircase into a pool and is most commonly scouted and paddled down river-right. Care should be taken on the approach to this rapid at high water levels.
There is still another 100km of sporadic whitewater of decreasing grade that makes for great canoeing down the Mann and Clarence Rivers to Copmanhurst. The most interesting paddling features of the lower reaches include Mulligans Bluff Rapid (grade III) which is visible from the Gwydir Highway and ‘Hanging Rock’ near the Broadwater Bridge, which offers great riverside camping near fun grade II rapids and great surfing waves at certain levels. Further downstream, the Clarence Gorge is one of the biggest and most spectacular gorges/rapids on the river system and includes the 10m high Rainbow Falls (grade V). These rapids are not part of the Nymbo catchment though, so we’ll move on.
