A classic section offering lots of technical grade III read-and-run rapids and tree-dodging interspersed with a couple of the biggest, runnable rapids on the plateau.
The trip starts off with one of the biggest rapids, Waterwheel Falls (a 6m drop into a slot where a waterwheel for power generation was once in place and a portage for most) in the first few minutes. The other big rapids include Star Falls (an 8m drop onto rocks and another derelict hydro development), Triple Treat (three great, consecutive Grade III-IV rapids within about 200m in the middle of the trip), Sluice Box (one of the Plateau’s finest grade IV+ rapids consisting of three drops and chutes in a tight canyon) and Gangsta Falls (a 12m drop into a huge pool). Most paddlers will do between one and six portages throughout the trip. The portaging is relatively straightforward but sometimes involves ferrying between islands, boat lowering and scrambling. Star Falls is portaged on river-right and Gangsta Falls is best portaged by lowering boats and downclimbing on river-left of the falls.

Length9km
Elevation and average gradient440m at put-in, 310m at take-out, 15m/km average
Paddling time:Typically 5 hours due to the high levels of scouting and portaging.
Gauge and level:One way to check the level is to look at the Little Nymboida in Lowanna. If it looks possible to paddle the rapid upstream of the bridge (about 0.4 on the manual gauge on this bridge), there is likely enough water to paddle this section. Other possible indicators include water lapping at the Bobo River Bridge on Lower Bobo Road and the Nymboida@Nymboida electronic gauge being at least 2.5m.
Put-in:Battery Falls 'Campground’ (not actually a campground), where Battery Falls Road meets the river approximately 12km northwest of Ulong.
Take-out:The junction of the Bobo and Little Nymboida Rivers via Timmsvale Road and Little Nymboida Trail. The last kilometre or so down to the takeout is quite steep and is slippery in the wet. Check it out before you get stuck in this remote area.
Shuttle:Hard (4WD). 45 minutes each way. From the put-in, travel back south to Timmsvale Road (at the time or writing continuing north and west on Battery Road or Gentle Annie Roads were not good options), then follow Timmsvale Road/Little Nymboida Trail to the junction with the Bobo.
