Description:

The Macquarie River flows through stony, very hilly grazing land with many outcrops of quartz. The river itself is set in a low valley among the hills, is quite wide in places and lined with casuarinas. From Howard's Bridge, the rivulet is narrow and contains some tight grade 2 rapids which could prove tricky for novices. After 2 1/2km it joins the Macquarie and there are now some lengthy flat stretches down to Bruinbun which are broken by grade 2 rapids and races, some of which are quite long and have large pressure waves in good water. A grade 3 rapid near a cliff about 1 1l2km downstream of Oakey Mt. Ford is normally shot on the far right, or portaged on the left. There are some interesting old stone ruins on the way which could be inspected. Camping is possible at Howard's Bridge and there are plentiful campsites with toilets along the Bridle Track in the Bruinbun vicinity.
