Description:

Note: The section from the Barnard Junction (Bretti Reserve) to the put-in point above Cundle Flat is about 6km of easy water with occasional grade 1-2 rapids. There is no direct road access for this 6 km section. The first section of the Lower Manning is referred to as ABOVE CUNDLE FLAT TO CUNDLE FLAT BRIDGE (12km) This half-day paddle is suitable for beginners. Access The pull-out point must be passed to get to the put-in point. Turn right at the northern end of Gloucester on the road to Taree. After 6.5km turn left. Follow this road for 5km. Turn left and cross the railway by an overhead bridge. After 4km cross the railway line at a level crossing. Continue on for about 16km, turn left then shortly turn left again and immediately cross the railway (bridge). 2.5 km further cross a long concrete bridge (Gloucester River). After 7.2km take the left fork (right fork leads to Tiri Bridge). A further 5km and the Cundle Flat Bridge is reached (pull-out point). Continue on this road to the put-in point (Map Ref. 018805). Camping is available at Cundle Flat, upstream of Cundle Flat Bridge. Full The Manning River description: The Manning River in the high country to the north of Barrington Tops National Park takes a zigzag course in a general easterly direction being joined by the Pigna Barney, Barnard and Gloucester Rivers as well as smaller tributaries. At first it travels through wild inaccessible bush country which opens out into hilly farming land near its junction with the Pigna Barney. It then makes a tortuous loop well away from roads and farms, first south-east curving to a north-easterly direction, meeting the road again near Gloryvale. It flattens out and flows for a short distance through Woko National Park then meanders for a considerable distance, mainly through farming country to eventually become tidal upstream of Taree. East of Taree it flows into the sea. Because there is no direct road connecting Bretti to Cundle Flat, the river is effectively divided into two distinct paddling portions - Upper and Lower Manning River. By making a long trip through Gloucester it is possible to travel by road between these portions but this usually is considered to be not worthwhile, unless the Bretti-Cundle Flat section is incorporated into a longer trip.
