The Beach campsite To (Hadley) Or Abercrombie - Goulburn Rd.

This section of river has a better flow than the Bummaroo Ford - The Beach Campground section, however the shuttle to paddle this section would be extremely long as the Beach - Bummaroo Ford takes about 1.5hrs one way, and then a further 1.5hrs to Hadley, so it would be roughly a 5-6hr return shuttle in total. The shorter shuttle option is to paddle the entire section from Bummaroo Ford - Hadley, which takes 2x Days. OR paddle from The Beach to Abercrombie - Goulburn Rd. which is also a long shuttle but an easier one.
From the Beach Campground, the river changes character from the upper section, as it opens out and there should be no portages around log jambs (as of July 2016). The grade of the river easy grade 2 rapids, separated by long flat pools. Just after the Retreat River junction, a rocky grade 2-3 rapid is encountered, before the river resumes its easy twisting path around horseshoe loops to the Bolong River Junction. Both these tributaries can add significant water to the river. A couple of short grade 2 drops follow, but with only 2km to go, the river changes character quite markedly. Before this point, the riverbed is made up of dark, angled rocks generally covered with similar gravel. Rounded granite boulders now appear, and the river widens over drops. The rapids here are the best of the trip. There are three grade 2-3 rapids in this stretch that are relatively straight forward, however there are some tree branches / logs in some areas to avoid.
There is a gauge just before the last rapid and also one at the northern side of the bridge at Abercrombie. A good level is 1.2m. (Minimum level is 1.0m.) However, if the river is flowing under Bummaroo Bridge, this section is canoeable. It does need very good rain in the area beforehand to be canoeable (at least 50mm plus within 24hrs in the upper catchment area)
The river is generally wider in this section than in the previous section except where it narrows appreciably for a few kilometres between Governor's Flat (Map Ref. 332287 Arkstone) and Hell's Hole (Map Ref. 318295 Arkstone) forming a short gorge. The pools become longer towards the end of the trip where the countryside opens out from the previous steep terrain. As a whole, this is a very pleasant paddle through quite hilly, timbered countryside that in the first half of the trip gives a feeling of remoteness. There are a number of camping spots, however there is private property towards the end of this section where camping is not allowed.
NOTE: A good option may be to join the Beach Campground to Abercrombie - Goulburn Rd. and do a multi-day trip as the trip from The Beach Campground to Hadley is a relatively short trip (14km and only about 4-5hrs on the river)
