The Canoeing Guide to NSW Rivers
The river is mostly wide with some large pools where progress can be slow if paddling into a headwind. There are many races, many grade 2-3 rapids and one grade 4+ rapid. This rapid is about 12km downstream of Uriarra, nearly 1 km downstream of Little Swamp Creek and is on the left-hand side of an island which is in the middle of the river (Map Ref. 770058 ACT). The right-hand side itself contains a long grade 3 rapid with a difficult sharp left turn near the end. Inspect both runs from the island and portage if necessary on the far left bank or from the large eddy in the right run before the turn at the end. The last rapid "Dog Trap Falls", is a 1 m chute, with a tricky swirl, on the left side of the river about 1 km from the finish. A major hazard will be, when constructed, a low-level bridge at Cusack's Crossing (Map Ref. 767027 ACT), about 7.5km downstream of Uriarra. This bridge is right in the middle of a long grade 3 rapid which has a meaty stopper at the end. The river divides around an island just upstream of the bridge. The safer route is to take the left channel and pull out well before the bridge. Over its entire length in this section, the river flows through very hilly country, either naturally vegetated or grazing land.
