Description:

The paddle starts in a 700m deep yet somewhat open gorge while the river runs through small rocky rapids some of which can be quite long. Campsites along this stretch are easily found. About 3km downstream of Rowleys Creek is a long, deep pool with the eastern bank a high flood plain. Here there is a forest with many mature eucalypts 30-40m high and a large grassy area. Immediately downstream of Reedy Creek is another large grassy area where the stream passes under trees. From here the river changes, becoming shallower and the scenery becomes more beautiful, including patches of rainforest in some of the gullies. A further 1 km downstream is a potentially dangerous rapid containing a half submerged log. Tree hazards now become a problem. The valley walls change, narrowing with rocky bluffs on each side of the stream. Another 3-4km on the Macleay is reached.
