The Canoeing Guide to NSW Rivers
About 1km downstream of the Armidale- Kempsey Road Bridge the Styx commences its precipitous fall into the gorge. This section is completely uncanoeable and continues for about 4km but below this is a 20km section which offers spectacular gorge scenery and some serious paddling for experienced canoeists. The first 8km of the trip has numerous grade 3 and 4 rapids with occasional grade 5s and frequent portages. Travel is extremely slow with the first 4km taking about 5 hours. It is easiest to do the trip without having to carry camping gear in which case a car should be left at the locked gate on Bob's Fire Road (Map Ref. 165185 Big Hill or Carrai). Leaving craft down at the river it is a very steep 2km climb to the cars. From about Map Ref. 135085 Big Hill and Carrai the river becomes easier with numerous grade 3 rapids extending almost to the Chandler junction. Carters Road reaches the Chandler 2km below the junction (Map Ref. 077020 Big Hill and Carrai).
