The Canoeing Guide to NSW Rivers
This section provides an easy scenic paddle in conjunction with a short car shuttle and convenient access. The Bendeela Picnic Reserve allows free camping in a very well-maintained and spacious riverside setting. Toilets and firewood are provided. The section consists of 3 short rocky rapids (grade 2) and a few gravel races. These are all straight forward, however the gravel-race which leads from under Hampden Bridge ends with its main current into overhanging trees. This should only prove troublesome to beginners if the water level exceeds 0.8m and there is an easy portage. Thick vegetation lines the stream's progress, while the small cliffs at the put-in point soon disappear with only an occasional rock outcrop remaining. The final 1 1/2km of the section is on the backwaters of Lake Yarrunga, a popular summer location.
