The Canoeing Guide to NSW Rivers
The river in this section flows through steep and inaccessible mountain country with cliffs up to 130m high. The gradient is moderate at first, but for the last 3km becomes severe with resultant difficult rapids. The first 2 1 /2km has several grade 3 rapids and one grade 4, which can easily be portaged and is the only difficult rapid for less skilled paddlers. There is a pullout point after this stage which involves a steep 15 minute climb up to the 4WD track used for the car shuttle - Map Ref. 589869 BobbyÆs Plains. It is very important that this point is not missed if an exit point is needed. The next stage starts with a grade 3 rapid and progresses with grade 4s to the difficult Horse Creek Junction stretch. There are grade 5 rapids at Map Refs. 584877 and 590881 BobbyÆs Plains. These can be portaged (with difficulty in high water). The second rapid is a virtually uncanoeable 3m waterfall. The whole of this stage has continuous rapids and is dangerous in high water. The trip is best paddled with light emergency gear only (including a lilo) and should be carefully planned with a third party knowing your intentions.
