The Canoeing Guide to NSW Rivers
This is a scenic section with clear water and many secluded campsites. Given a normal flow the river has numerous grade 2 rapids and one grade 3 about halfway. However increased water levels result in pressure waves and some tricky maneuvering is needed around numerous fallen trees. Tight turns around logs and rocky races are typical in the upper stretches while lower down many rock garden style rapids are prevalent. Blackberries and fallen trees can be a nuisance, but generally all obstacles and rapids can easily be portaged given a normal flow. (See warning below). Good isolated trout fishing is available, mainly because intermediate access is made difficult by locked gates. The significant flood in 2012 has doubled the width of the river in some places and resulted in hundreds of large trees that were killed in the 2003 fires falling into the river. There are now many log jams blocking the river making negotiating the rapids more difficult.
