The Canoeing Guide to NSW Rivers
This section, in contrast to the previous one, is characterised by long pools, a few rocky rapids and races and almost no tree blockages. The first part has a couple of nice small drops, and tricky curved gravel races, but presents no hazards. About 5-6km down is a couple of enjoyable rapids, including an easy grade 2 where a rocky outcrop ridges into the river in contrast to the usual tree-cluttered banks. From there to past Brooman is a very long (4km) deep pool. As the river becomes less interesting and more cluttered from here down, Brooman is a good spot to pull out. About 1 km downstream of Brooman there is a portage around a large fallen tree in the middle of a gravel-race, and some partial blockages in the small gravel races following. On entering the big horseshoe at 16km another portage around a massive tree is required, which is followed by a couple more; this area is very messy. Two small rocky rapids lead to the final long pool down to Shallow Crossing. If pulling out at the Brooman Gauge, ensure you leave a marker on the river left bank, as the finishing point is not easily seen from the river.
