Lake Lyell to Jenolan Caves Road (Glenroy Bridge)
C1 & OC1
Suitable for novices with an experienced leader.
Grade 2 at 700 Ml/day.
The put-in is accessed by walking down a maintenance road that reaches the bottom of the dam at Lake Lyell. Park cars at the dam wall viewing area, at other end of the dam, so as not to obstruct the access road.
There is intermediate access at McKanes Falls bridge, about two-thrids of the way along this run.
After McKanes Falls bridge and near Whitees Ck confluence, there is one Grade IV rapid (that is portageable on river left), followed by a short Grade III section. McKanes Falls (IV) is a 3-stage rapid, the first two stages of which are obstructed by standing Casuarinas and current that flows into log jams. It’s possible to portage the first two stages to paddle the final (main) drop. This final drop has rocks in the landing zone that could cause a pin/piton, so choose your line carefully and set up safety, or portage on river left. After McKanes Falls is a short section of Grade 3 at 700 Ml/day.
Hazards: standing Casuarinas and log jams. Also, there are 4 fences across the river that might need portaging around. Most of the portages are short and easy.
The takeout at Glenroy Bridge, just above the River Lett confluence, is on private property that has an honesty donation box for access. Please respect it so that paddlers will have continued access to this spot.
