Monarch Bluff Campsite is located opposite the Monarch Bluff. The Bluff, when approached from the north, takes on the shape of a regal face. The site is nestled opposite on the side of a sizeable sloped embankment and escaprment. Access is via water only.
The campsite is consists of sloped grass and some dirt patches, however there are a few suitable areas for setting up tents to cater for a small to medium sized group. The site also has a bush toilet. Be careful of the abundant stinging nettle at the edge of the campsite. Carry some antiseptic cream or savlon to reduce the sting should you brush your skin against this plant.
Local birdlife includes Wonga pigeons, Cat Birds, Azure Kingfishers, Superb Fairy Wrens, Treecreepers, Whip birds and Bowerbirds. There is also a colony of Microbats that live in one of the dead trees standing tall in the water adjacent to the campsite. After sunset we witnessed more than a dozen leaving their shelter high up in the tree. Predawn they can be observed circling low around the campsite before eventually sweeping back to their tree. There is also a large number of Monarch Butterflies in the vicinity.
There are resident goannas; however unlike at a few other campsites in the region the goannas here are not a nuisance. Be sure to store away your food when you leave the area unattended or retire for bed anyway.
