Description
The Old Merlya Road / Timelong Trail is a splendid piece of history. Built by hand in 1896 it was the original road out of Kangaroo Valley to the Southern Highlands. With the construction of Tallowa Dam in 1976 Yarrunga Creek flooded and disected the road in two. The incredible and extensive stone retaining walls reaching out either side of the creek still exist, although in a few sections it has crumbled away.
It is quite amazing to stand on the road and let yourself imagine the horses and carriages that would have moved people and products through this area over a century ago.

Exploring the Old Meryla Road / Timelong Trail on foot is worth the time and effort. This 19th Century hand constructed road slopes gently up and away.
The road surface can be used as a small campsite, though decent flat spaces are not easy to find.
A small waterfall a short distance along the road on the east provides water somewhat clearer that of Yarrunga Creek itself.

The Old Merlya Road / Timelong Trail; constructed by hand in 1896, gradually disappears into the water on the eastern side as you head up Yarrunga Creek.
