                  Description

Surrounded  by heavy industry the Mutton Cove Conservation Reserve at the northern end of Lefevre Peninsula is an isolated spot. Today the remains of the Excelsior lie embedded in mud. Built in Dundee, Scotland, in 1897 she worked in Tahiti, Northern NSW and South Australia until she was sold to the SA Harbours Board in 1933. She was used as a coal hulk, lightering coal to the dredges working in the Port River. Diesel power gradually took over and she was eventually abandoned in 1945.
