Commencing operation in 1878, the Point Malcolm Lighthouse is the only Australian light station that is inland, it is also the countries smallest. Acting as a navigation aid on the lower lakes the lighthouse marks the passage between Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert. Paddle steamers, fishing boats, cargo steamers and sailing boats all relied on the lighthouse for safe navigation on the lakes as the light could be seen for up to 16kms (10 nm)
Decommissioned in September 1931 and replaced with a single light on a pole due to the declining traffic on the lake.
Extreme caution should be taken when paddling on Lake Alexandrina or Lake Albert, as increasing wind strength can cause changes in lake surface conditions which may quickly become unmanageable for all level of experience. Know the limit of your ability and take a conservative approach. Always check weather for predicted wind changes or approaching fronts.
