Description

Known as the oldest town in the Riverina Moulamein has a number of historical features scattered through the township and surrounds. Moulamein Wharf was constructed in 1908 and is located on the northern banks of the Edward River downstream from the Edward River and the Billabong Creek junction. It still stands as a reminder of bygone days when the town prospered as an inland port, when the river system was the most effective means of transport for local produce. The Edward runs through the town and boasts some of the best fishing and canoeing spots in the area. A River Walk along the southern bank takes in the 'Big Tree' that is said to be over 300 years old and over 11 metres wide. On the opposite bank “Mooloomoon” Historic Shearing Shed is linked to the township by a river walk. The Edward River flows into the Wakool River 4 km upstream of Kyalite and then the Wakool flows a further 35 km down to the Murray River.
In mid-May, following the completion of irrigation requirements for the season, the annual lowering of the Stevens Weir pool begins and the water level of the entire river system drops. This allows for capital works and maintenance programs to be completed as well as providing a more natural wetting and drying regime which is important to wetland and riparian health.
