Slaney Weir on Slaney Creek in the Chowilla Creek system
The weir is approx 200m from where Slaney Creek comes off the Murray River.
Start the portage from the access ramp that has been cut into the bank. (S33.961927, E 140.951576) Proceed with caution on steep slippery slopes when handling loaded kayaks or canoes. Portage distance approx 275m.
Avoid paddling within 50m of the weir (both upstream or downstream).
There are at least 3 major snags to negotiate in the next 750 - 1000m of Slaney creek. During periods of high water flow proceed with extreme caution in the vicinity of snags and strainers. Portage around snags where necessary.
Always check the forecast wind prior to departure and for anticipated duration of your journey. Avoid being on the water during the passage of a cold front which is usuall accompanied by increase in wind velocity and a drop in temperature.
