Description

The Railway Bridge across the Murray River was completed in 1925. From 1886 the railway had shared the road bridge from the time the railway line from Melbourne was completed in 1886.
The town of Murray Bridge was named in 1924. Prior to that time the area had first been known as Edwards Crossing and also the Port of Mobilong, where the Wharf and railway line intersected with the river steamers bringing farm produce down the river and taking supplies back to the towns and stations along the river.
You will notice that one span of the railway bridge is longer than the other two. The story of this is tied to a mix-up in the delivery. The steel girders being manufactured in England, along with an order for another bridge (in India), which received 2 longer spans and one shorter span.
See the information about the building of the road bridge for further information. Take a leisurely walk across the road bridge
