Description:
This short section is rarely paddled. During the gold mining days a tunnel was built to divert the majority of the river's water. The tunnel entrance is reached approximately 2.5 k from Walhalla Road Bridge. There has been various proposals to block the tunnel entrance or to stop the water being diverted but at this stage the water still goes through the tunnel. The diversion means that there is insufficient water to paddle the section between the tunnel entrance and exit. The options are to portage across the same ground as the tunnel or to drag boats over the river bed. The tunnel is extremely dangerous and should not be enterred. There is good camping at the exit point at Coopers Creek.
