Beecroft Peninsula Circumnavigation
Jon Mortimer manages the Eurobodalla Kayakers website and email list. Eurobodalla Kayakers is not a club. It is simply a facility for sharing information about some kayaking activities in the district, for kayakers who want to know when and where other paddlers might be found on the water. Further information, including a calendar of paddles, is available on the website (access via the link below) or via the email eurobodallakayakers[at]gmail.com
Eurobodalla Kayakers
The vertical sandstone cliffs rising dramatically from the ocean with caves, arches, clefts and stacks give this open water paddle a reputation as one of the best in the State. This same geology also reflects swell, bends the wind, keeps you from shelter and blocks mobile phone and marine radio communication, making this a serious paddle for experienced sea kayakers only.
Launch from the sheltered beach near the Currarong Creek inlet and paddle around the cliffs on the northern tip of the peninsula. Beyond here is committing as you fully exposed to the sea with only one landing spot on the whole eastern side. Gum Getters Inlet provides a welcome spot for a break but the entrance is shallow and rocky at low tide. Look out for the seal colony on the rock ledge around Drum and Drumsticks.
The cliifs increase in height to just over 90 metres at Point Perpendicular. On the way there are many opportunities to look in sea caves, go through arches and run gauntlets if the conditions allow. Take another break at Boat Harbour or land through surf at Target Beach. Then an easy run around to Honeymoon Bay.
It is possible to complete the whole 36 km circumnavigation of the Peninsula by continuing past Honeymoon Bay and paddling up Carama Creek. jump out and carry your kayaks 20 metres through a bush track and then carry or trolley your kayaks a few hundred metres metres down the road before launching from the beach on the ocean side. Carama Creek is shallow so you will need to arrive somewhere near the top of the tide.
Depending on wind and swell this paddle can of course be done in the reverse dorection
