A rarely paddled, committing section that is a long, taxing day in a deep gorge with many difficult portages.
This is a very long day, consisting generally of grade III rapids and many optional drops up to grade V+ and beautiful forest. The ability to catch small eddies above some of the big rapids is critical to managing some of the portages. Mavia Falls (about 7km into the trip) is the biggest obstacle that requires a huge portage on river-right around the falls and canyon below (about 2 hours) or abseiling the falls and paddling the canyon. There is also another large waterfall about 1km before the junction. Portage options here are difficult to see from the top, however a small but committing drop leads into a good eddy on river-left above the main waterfall. From this point a wondrous portage ramp leads all the way down to the pool below, via an overhanging rock that is home to many paper wasps. Keep in mind also, that if it is high enough to paddle this section, the Nymboida will be very high. Although this section of the Nymboida is usually considered to be continuous grade II/III, at these levels there will be some huge holes that need avoiding.

There is also a live flood camera on the Bellingen Shire Council bridge flood camera network website but since it was only installed in 2023, there hasn’t been time to calibrate it for paddling.
