Description:

The river is again wide in this section and lined with casuarinas. There are some long reaches with sandy beds and deep pools. Rocky, hilly country rises fairly steeply from the river with some of the bluffs along the way providing scenic views. The first rapid, a long grade 2-3 chute curving around a tight loop in the river about 1km from the start (now called Amy Anderson Reserve) has two small drops and is quite useful for practising techniques. In high water there are some large pressure waves in this rapid, and a difficult stopper half-way down on the right which should be avoided. The Bruinbun gauge is located about 2km down- stream of this rapid, after a long grade 2 rapid at the end of a long reach with an old flying fox overhead. A few grade 2 rapids and races follow, separated by long pools, down to Fitzgerald's Sanctuary, just downstream of Monaghan's Bluff. From here to the exit point there are four grade 2-3 rapids which have some large waves and stoppers in high water. The last and largest cannot be clearly seen from the road; it is a long rapid curving beneath a bluff on the left before it flows over two small drops with a big stopper at the bottom. A grade 2 rapid right at the exit point has some good waves for ferry-gliding practice. There are numerous campsites along the river, some of which have toilet facilities. This section is quite popular with day-trippers in the warmer months.
