
013. Cowra To Forbes
The Cowra to Forbes section can be broken up into many managable sections from a couple of hours to days, if the complete run seem excessive. See access points for Lachlan River and separate sections listed below on this site for details of each point.
This river, whilst beautiful, has its hidden hazards. Tree snags across the river varies the flow and speed of the water, sometimes dramitacly and as such requires the paddling visitor to be awear at all times of their circumstances. always paddle with a friend. The varing flows generating varing depths altering the hazards almost hourly, be they submerged objects or overhanging obstructions.

Merriganowry Bridge to Males TSR (5.5km - 1hr 30 min)
Males TSR to Gooloogong (18km - 4hrs 30min) ( Gray st.)
Gooloogong to Bloom fields (14km -3hrs 30min)
Bloomfields to Paytons Bridge TSR (21km -6hrs)
Paytons Bridge to Pilgrim hill TSR (17km - 5hrs) (Waugan TSR 10km from Paytons )
Pilgrim Hill to Cumbijowa TSR (7km -2hrs)
Cumbijowa TSR to 8 Mile TSR (17km - 5hrs) (12mile 7km from Cumbijowa)
8 mile to Torig park (20km -6hrs)
Torig Park to Forbes old weir (7km -1.5 hrs) Caravan park
The flow in this section varies greatly depending on water released from Wyangala Dam and rainfall. It generally has a moderate flow during the irrigation season but can rise quickly and approach flood levels particularly below the junction of the Lachlan and Belubula rivers near Gooloogong. Beware of snags and irrigation pumps and the dangerous Forbes old Weir, which should be portaged on the right.
The river banks from Cowra to Forbes are steep and in some places high. Ensure a 15m length of rope is in your kit to make the entry and exit a little easier. Some campsites normally can be found on beaches by the water as you move down. There are a number of large tree that are laying across the river at differant points which are either crossed under or over depending on water height. Their can be total blockages that require portage to negotiate.
Gooloogong village is the only point of resupply on this river in this section, with most services available. See Gooloogong way point. Eugowra is further down but quite a distance from the river.
Ensure that the river height allowing you to start in Cowra ( MIN of 1.7m) has reached Forbes or will reach Forbes before you do. There is a considerable time differance , depending on the flow , for water to reach Forbes from Cowra. Water from Cowra reaches Forbes ,on average, in three days. Cowra Gauge 412002 is the starting point where you need >1.7 as a min and Forbes >1m min. See exit point for exit options.
Exiting the river at Forbes can be at a number of sites, see Forbes access waypoints. The suggested exit point is the wier pool of the old wier at the caravan park at the iron bridge in Forbes. Make your self awear of the old weir and its obvious dangers. Not to be tackled by inexperianced paddlers.
There are 12 travelling stock reserves and public access areas between Cowra and Forbes which can provide way points and camp sites if using vehicle support or for emergency access . These reserves are public land managed by a TSR ranger. Camping in these reserves is permitted with a permit but daily usage/rest/recovery is accepted with out permit. These reserves are listed as way points on this site for this section.
